Albuen
Albuen is a long, narrow and characteristically curved spit on the west coast of Lolland, enclosing Nakskov Fjord and stretching into the Langeland Belt. Albuen forms the outermost part of the 5 km long sand spit Dragene, which is between 20 and 200 metres wide, created by stones and sand carried here over thousands of years. The area lies within Naturpark Nakskov Fjord and offers sweeping views, an open, wind-swept landscape and a particularly beautiful light. Albuen also holds a surprising cultural history: from the 15th century until well into the 20th century, Albuen Harbour was a significant fishing port with lively trade, particularly during herring seasons. A lighthouse still stands, and the former pilot station now serves as a museum and nature centre. Vegetation is sparse and there is little shelter from the wind, but the area has a rich birdlife and parts of it are a protected bird reserve. Spring and autumn are especially rewarding for birdwatching. The area is well suited to walking and cycling, and coastal fishing, kayaking and surfing are also possible. Near the village of Ydø there is a campsite from which walks can begin, or cars can be parked at Rampen. Bring plenty of water and food, as there are no facilities along the way, and remember wind-proof clothing. Dogs off leads are prohibited to protect the birdlife.

Avnø is a magnificent nature area northwest of Vordingborg, where the peninsula was previously both an island and a military airbase. The airbase was decommissioned in 1993, and since 2004 the site has functioned as a nature centre. The open landscape with coastal meadows, a lake and some woodland is home to a rich birdlife — waders, geese, ducks and birds of prey — and harbour seals live in the fjord year-round. Avnø Nature Centre is unstaffed and open around the clock; the former airbase buildings house an exhibition, and from the old control tower there is a panoramic view across the entire area. There are marked circular routes of around 3 km, a fire shelter and benches along the coast. The nature centre is run in collaboration between Vordingborg Municipality, Næstved Municipality and the Danish Nature Agency.

Here you can see the characteristic flat-bottomed fishing boats and experience the quiet of a harbour still used for fishing. Boesdal Kalkbrud Strand
Beach at the historic Boesdal Lime Quarry on Stevns. What makes Boesdal truly special is the access to the beach. Boesdal is one of the few places where you can walk 'through' the cliff and out to the sea, through the opening where flint was previously tipped onto the beach. The surplus flint from lime extraction was transported out through a tunnel blasted into the cliff — the tunnel grew larger and larger, and today it serves as a passage to the sea and the cliff face. This also means that from the quarry you can walk all the way down to the beach without stairs, making the site unusually accessible.

Bøndernes Egehoved
Bøndernes Egehoved is a small, protected nature area on the Jungshoved peninsula near Roneklint, facing Præstø Fjord. The site has been called the epitome of Danish nature romanticism — a park-like Golden Age landscape where beech trees mirror their crowns in the fjord, and where Achton Friis, in his 1930s work "De Danskes Land", praised the wide view over the water. Behind the idyll lies an unusually rich nature: the area contains the three threatened habitat types — grassland, fen and coastal meadow — and oak trees more than 400 years old provide habitat for a wide range of species. Rare plants grow here among tussocks of yellow meadow ants, and old thickets of hornbeam, crab apple, hawthorn, wild roses and field maple can be found. The area is known for its tree frogs, rare fungi and rich birdlife, and continued grazing helps the species-rich flora thrive. The site was long difficult to access due to overgrowth, but a local nature project on Jungshoved has laid out paths so visitors can once again experience the atmospheric landscape — a perfect spot for a woodland walk or a summer picnic.
📍 Roneklintvej 5, 4720 Præstø
Bøndersvig Enge
Bøndersvig Enge lies on the shore of Søndersø below the golf course, as part of Naturpark Maribosøerne. The low, damp meadows facing the lake are a fine place to experience the nature park's rich birdlife, and the area is often highlighted as a good spot for seeing white-tailed eagles — visitors who remember to look up have a good chance of spotting one at Maribosøerne. The meadows are a calm, undisturbed natural area close to Maribo, well suited for a walk where you can enjoy the view over the lake and scan for waders and waterfowl with binoculars. Together with the nature park's other paths and lakeshores, Bøndersvig Enge forms part of one of Denmark's most significant inland nature areas.

Bøtø Nor Fuglereservat
Bøtø Nor is a 175-hectare bird and nature reserve on the southern tip of Falster, established as compensation for the large-scale drainage of the original 2,245-hectare lagoon, which was converted to agricultural land from 1860 onwards. The reserve's central lake, surrounded by meadows, reed beds and seasonally flooded areas, supports an exceptionally rich birdlife: breeding cranes, marsh harriers, teal, garganey and spoonbills nest here in summer, while winter brings large flocks of barnacle geese, bean geese and whooper swans. Three observation towers allow visitors to observe birds at close range — access inside the reserve itself is prohibited year-round. In recent years, the Danish Nature Fund and Guldborgsund Municipality have acquired adjacent land and periodically flooded it, attracting rare waders such as wood sandpiper and ruff in large numbers.

Behind the beach lies a broad area well suited for sunbathing and picnics. There is a bathing jetty at the water's edge, toilets behind the dyke, and good access for wheelchair users and prams along the path on the dyke — which can also be used for cycling and walking. Parking is at the end of Bredfjedvej.

Bregentved Gods
Bregentved Gods near Haslev is one of Denmark's largest estates, with landholdings of around 6,250 hectares of which approximately half is woodland. The estate's history can be traced back to 1319, and over the centuries it passed through various aristocratic hands before Frederik V gave it in 1746 to his prime minister and close adviser A.G. Moltke. Since then it has remained in the Moltke family. The main building consists of three wings: the north wing dates from the 17th century, while the south and east wings were built in 1890 in Neo-Rococo style. The building is easily recognisable by its large copper spire, and all three wings are listed.

Broskovvejen
One of Denmark's best-preserved ancient roads, located approximately 5 km north-west of Præstø. The almost 70-metre-long and 3.5-metre-wide paving was laid during the Late Roman Iron Age (300–400 AD) to make it possible to cross a wet ford over Hulebækken. On top of the Iron Age road lies a somewhat less carefully built medieval road. The road was discovered in 1949 during drainage work, excavated by the National Museum, and is today a listed ancient monument — cleared in 2009 so the stonework is again visible. A footpath leads the last approximately 260 metres out to the road.

Brøndehøje Skanse
At the top of the coastal escarpment at the western end of the forest Busene Have, on the south-eastern tip of Møn about four kilometres east of Klintholm Harbour, lies Brøndehøje Skanse. The fortification was built during the Swedish Wars of 1658–60 and is said to have had six cannons, though it is widely believed the site has roots stretching back to the Middle Ages, when small defensive works were erected along exposed coasts to guard against raids from the Baltic. From the redoubt there is a wide view over the Baltic Sea, from where approaching enemy ships could be signalled in good time to the other coastal defences and to the towns inland. The site also bears traces of a vanished fishing village: near the redoubt lay Brøndhøje, which during the height of the herring fishery was closely connected to the Lübeck merchants' Baltic trade and brought great prosperity to Møn, until the settlement was washed away in the storm surge of 1625 and never rebuilt. The redoubt is part of one of Denmark's richest prehistoric landscapes: the surrounding Busene Have contains a long barrow and ten round burial mounds, presumably from the Bronze Age, and visitors are quickly captivated by the special atmosphere where history and nature are closely intertwined.

Busene Have
On the south-eastern tip of Møn, around four kilometres east of Klintholm Harbour, lies Busene Have — an old coastal forest containing one of Denmark's richest landscapes of ancient monuments. In and around the forest are traces from almost the entire prehistoric period: a long barrow and ten protected burial mounds, probably from the Bronze Age, as well as standing stones and Viking graves. One of the best-known finds is a sacrificial well from the Late Bronze Age, around 500 BC, built in a hollowed-out alder trunk. On the western edge of the forest, atop the coastal cliff, also lies Brøndehøje Skanse, a redoubt built during the Swedish Wars in the 1600s. The forest lies dramatically along the coast with direct access to the beach, and the varied flora and untouched nature make the site an obvious destination for anyone wishing to experience prehistoric burial culture in an evocative natural landscape. The Danish Agency for Culture and Palaces has put up information boards about both the redoubt and the area's ancient monuments.

Dark Sky Park Møn og Nyord
In 2017, Møn and Nyord became the first places in the Nordic region to be certified as an International Dark Sky Park and International Dark Sky Community by the international organisation DarkSky International (IDA) — and uniquely in world history, they received both certifications at once. This followed a dedicated local effort that has worked since 2014 to reduce light pollution and preserve darkness as a resource for nature, wildlife and people. Møn and Nyord are Denmark's darkest place and among the darkest measured locations in Europe: on clear, moonless nights the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye, and there are good opportunities to observe planets, nebulae and meteors. The area offers organised night walks, stargazing and events tailored to the night sky — visitors are advised to plan their visit during periods of new moon and clear skies for the best experience.

Den sydlige kanon
The southern gun turret at Stevns Fort, officially designated Piece 2, is one of the fort's two twin-barrelled 150 mm armoured turrets and together with the northern turret (Piece 1) forms the fort's original main armament. Unlike the northern turret, Piece 2 stands freely accessible outside the fence of the Cold War Museum Stevns Fort and can be seen without an entrance fee. The cannons originate from the German battleship Gneisenau, which was decommissioned in 1942. Two of the ship's twin turrets with 15 cm secondary artillery were installed during the occupation at the coastal battery at Grådyb on Fanø, and after the war were moved to Stevns, where they were mounted as the fort's main battery in 1952–55. The cannons had a range of around 22 km and were aimed at the southern approach to the Øresund and Faxe Bay, where they were to protect sea minefields planned in the event of war to prevent the Warsaw Pact fleet from breaking through into the Kattegat and onwards into the Atlantic. Piece 2 and the surrounding southern section of the underground installation were mothballed in the early 1980s when the fort was modernised and concentrated around the northern section. The installation — including both gun turrets — was listed in 2012 as part of the overall Stevns Fort. The turret stands on the cliff edge with views over the Øresund and is connected to the underground guided tour at the museum, where you can see the ammunition magazine and the elevator that transported shells up to the cannon. The turret itself can be seen from outside year-round; access to the interior fort system requires a guided tour at the museum. Located at Korsnæbsvej, Rødvig, just south of the main entrance to the Cold War Museum Stevns Fort. Accessible from the hiking trail along Stevns Klint.

Dobbeltjættestuen Månehøj
Månehøj — also written Måneshøj — is a passage grave from the Funnel Beaker Neolithic period, located on the Svinø peninsula north-west of Vordingborg. It was built around 3200 BC and is one of the relatively few well-preserved double passage graves in Denmark: a long burial chamber divided in two by a so-called dividing stone. The grave was excavated in 1908 — begun by the farm's owner and shortly afterwards taken over by the National Museum — where skeletal remains of men, women and children were found, along with around 300 artefacts, including pottery from the Funnel Beaker culture and a rare, almost intact 'face vessel' with eyes and eyebrows. The finds are kept at the National Museum. In 2004 the monument was thoroughly restored, with supporting stones straightened and the heavy capstones repositioned. The passage grave today stands with an open layout — without its original covering mound — giving a clear view of its construction. The site has free access and is signposted.

Dodekalitten (nær Sakskøbing)
On a hillock near Kragenæs on the island of Lolland, 12 monumental stone sculptures rise in a circle 40 metres in diameter. Each basalt monument stands 7–9 metres tall and weighs 25–45 tonnes, with the top carved as a face gazing inward toward the centre of the circle. The artwork — Dodekalitten — is a collaboration between sculptor Thomas Kadziola and composer Gunner Møller Pedersen, and it is also a sound installation: each stone emits its own tone, which varies with wind and light. The narrative starting point is one of history's great natural catastrophes: when the Mediterranean, around 7,500 years ago, broke through the Bosphorus Strait and flooded the Black Sea and the advanced agricultural civilisation on its shores — an event thought to underlie the myth of the Great Flood. The project began in 2010 with the first stone placed in 2012 and is now complete with all 12 sculptures in place. The site is freely accessible all year round.

To the west it is separated from Karrebæksminde Bay and the Småland Waters by the low barrier island of Dybsø and the southern tip of Enø, while the Svinø peninsula lies to the south. The fjord is considered one of Denmark's cleanest, and its low salinity and lush, sandy bottom make it a particularly rich natural area.

Enehøje is an island of just under 1 km² in the outer part of Nakskov Fjord, reached by the mail boat Vesta from Nakskov Harbour. The island has been inhabited since the 1500s and still had 25 permanent residents in 1925 — today it is uninhabited. From 1926 to 1940 the island was owned by the colourful polar explorer, author and journalist Peter Freuchen (1886–1957), who retreated here from the world to write; he received well-known guests in his blue summer house, which can still be seen. Freuchen is best known for the Thule Expedition with Knud Rasmussen and for a long series of books and films about the Arctic, and he has since become one of the most legendary figures in Danish polar history. The museum, originally founded as Falsters Minder in 1913, moved into Czarens Hus in 1923 and was state-recognised in 1946. Fanefjord Jættestue
Fanefjord Passage Grave on Møn is one of the island's most beautifully preserved megalithic tombs, dating from around 3000 BC. The passage grave is situated on a hill with views over Fanefjord and is surrounded by a protected landscape zone. A quiet and almost mystical experience, particularly in fog or early morning. In the forest lie 16 protected burial mounds of various sizes from the Bronze Age. None of the mounds have been the subject of archaeological investigations, so the dating to the Bronze Age (1,700–500 BC) is based primarily on the size and landscape position of the mounds.

Feddet Strand
Feddet Beach is located on the Feddet peninsula near Faxe, where a long, narrow spit of land separates Faxe Bay from Præstø Fjord. The peninsula was formed by beach ridges over the past approximately 2,000 years and is still growing due to the constant supply of sand from the north-east. The subsoil consists primarily of gravel, sand and flint, creating nutrient-poor soil and a very special plant and animal life. Feddet is home to, among other things, Zealand's largest heath with heather, grass and scattered pine, oak and birch forest, and the peninsula is often described as a little piece of West Jutland in the middle of the Zealand landscape. The beach itself stretches for several kilometres and is particularly child-friendly with its shallow, calm water.

Femø og Fejø (ø-hop)
Fejø and Femø are reached by ferry from Kragenæs on Lolland and offer two different experiences of quiet island life in the Smålandsfarvandet strait. Fejø is best known for its orchards — especially the apple and cherry growing that the island's farms have practised for generations — and the Fejø apple's reputation as one of Denmark's finest apple varieties has given the island an identity reaching far beyond Lolland. The island offers cycling routes through the orchards, coastal meadows and a relaxed atmosphere. Femø is even more remote and unspoilt: a small harbour, an authentic island environment and undisturbed nature. Both islands are well suited for a day trip and can also be combined into an island-hopping tour — it's worth planning a visit during the harvest season, when the orchards are at their most beautiful.

Fjord til Fjord-stien
The Fjord to Fjord Trail is a nature trail of around 28–30 km connecting Avnø Fjord and Præstø Fjord across Zealand's narrowest point. The route passes through open countryside with hedgerows, canals and minor roads, passing several villages and natural areas along the way. From Avnø, where you may be lucky enough to spot seals near the nature centre, the trail passes through the drained Køng-Sværdborg-Lundby Bog — thousands of years ago a large lake with Stone Age settlements — and continues past villages such as Sværdborg, Neble and Grumløse and through Faksinge Forest, before ending at Nysø Manor and Præstø Harbour. The route forms part of the longer Sjællandsleden trail and is also open to horse riders. Waymarking can be sparse in places, so it is recommended to bring a map or route app.

Flysimulatoren - Nordstrandsgård
At Nordstrandsgård near Lundby, halfway between Næstved and Vordingborg in South Zealand, Jeanette and Michael run a farm with an unusual attraction: a full-scale King Air B350 flight simulator. The simulator previously served as a professional training device at Roskilde Airport, where pilots from airlines including SAS and Norwegian trained on it. In spring 2025, Michael took over the simulator and moved it to the farm, where, after extensive rebuilding, it now allows visitors to try their hand at real flying. In the cockpit, you sit in front of a curved screen measuring around 8 x 2-3 metres, giving an experience close to reality. You can choose your own destination, as the simulator covers airports all over the world. Michael, who holds a pilot’s licence himself, guides you throughout — from a gentle introduction to more advanced exercises such as instrument landings. Several people can take turns in the cockpit, and outside there is a small lounge fitted with real aircraft seats, where others can follow the flight as “passengers.” Visits are by appointment only and must be booked by phone. One hour in the cockpit costs 1,000 DKK, two hours 1,750 DKK, and gift vouchers are also available. As this is a private farm with no fixed opening hours, it is recommended to contact Michael well in advance to arrange a time.

Frilandsmuseet De Gamle Huse (Maribo)
The open-air museum De Gamle Huse in Maribo is one of the exhibition venues under Museum Lolland-Falster, beautifully situated by Bangs Have in the Maribosøerne Nature Park down towards Maribo Lake. The museum is Denmark's third-oldest open-air museum: its history began in 1923, when the chairman of the Lolland-Falster Diocesan Museum secured a plot for the preservation of old houses from the area, and the museum opened in 1927. Today, 13 half-timbered houses from Lolland-Falster have been reconstructed on the site — buildings from the late 17th century to the early 20th century that served as farmsteads, smallholdings, agricultural labourers' cottages, rectories, schools, smithies, windmills and fire engine houses. Original artefacts and small scenarios convey rural life in the 18th and 19th centuries, and gardens have been laid out along with opportunities for traditional village games. The museum also houses a steam-powered ploughing machine from 1872. The venue is well suited to a family excursion and can be combined with a walk in the surrounding nature park.

The castle park at Gavnø Castle is a historic park of approximately 80,000 m² in scenic surroundings on the island of Gavnø south-west of Næstved. The park is best known for Denmark's largest and oldest tulip festival, founded in 1957, which transforms the flowerbeds into a sea of colour with thousands of tulips in changing patterns every spring — the castle gardeners plant new bulbs each autumn, so no two seasons are alike. The park offers beautiful flowers throughout the season and includes a rose garden with a rose maze, a sensory garden and a Sakura cherry blossom avenue with around 40 trees over 100 years old in the northern part. There is plenty of space for walks and nature experiences for the whole family, and the park also serves as the venue for several of Gavnø's events.

The former naval station at the tip now houses an exhibition and community centre telling the story of the headland's nature, geology, birdlife and its strategic role during the Cold War, when the station monitored Warsaw Pact shipping traffic towards the Øresund. In the atrium garden stands the four-tonne Sydstenen (Southern Stone) as a symbol of Denmark's southernmost point. Gedser Odde is one of the country's most important migratory bird sites: Falster acts as a funnel channelling tens of thousands of birds out over the sea every spring and autumn. Gedser Bird Station, run by volunteers from the Danish Ornithological Society in the former lighthouse keeper's residence, rings more small birds than anywhere else in Denmark — up to 16,000 in autumn. Gedser Lighthouse, inaugurated in 1802 and most recently renovated in 2021, can be seen 48 km away.

Glumsø Sø Strand
In the middle of Glumsø lies Glumsø Lake, which in 2017 got its own small freshwater beach. The beach was created by a group of local volunteers after years of planning and a community survey in the town. At approximately six metres in length, it was called Denmark's smallest bathing beach at its inauguration, and that very modest size has become the place's charm and characteristic. Glumsø Lake actually has a long bathing history — as far back as the 1930s and up until the end of the Second World War, the lake was a popular excursion and bathing spot where many of the town's children learned to swim.

Hellig Svends Kilde
Hellig Svends Kilde is a historic holy spring located on the grounds of Vemmetofte Convent, close to Vemmetofte Beach. According to legend, the spring rose up at the spot where the crusader Svend was washed ashore after a shipwreck off the coast — supposedly around the year 1104. The spring's ochre-tinted water was considered to have healing properties, and a chapel was built beside it as early as 1536. In recent years the Stevns-based artist Bo Karberg, together with a paving company, created a stone artwork above the spring, inaugurated in 2024, in which the ochre-coloured water flows out through four openings to form the crusaders' Maltese cross. A quiet spot beneath the forest's old trees, where it is once again possible to drink from the spring.

Herlufsholm
Down towards the Suså river, about two kilometres north of Næstved, lies Herlufsholm — a historic complex where a medieval monastery, a manor house and one of the country's oldest schools have grown together over nearly nine centuries. The history begins in 1135, when the nobleman Peder Bodilsen donated a church to a group of Benedictine monks who settled by the river and founded Skovkloster. At the Reformation the Crown seized the monastery's land, and the last monks left in 1559. The following year, the naval hero Herluf Trolle and his wife Birgitte Gøye took over the area in an exchange with Frederik II — the king received Hillerødsholm in return, which later became Frederiksborg Castle. In 1565 the couple converted their estate into a foundation charter and established Herlufsholm School and Estate, a free school "for nobles and the children of other honest men". The school long admitted only boys; the upper secondary school opened to day pupils of both sexes in 1966, and girls were admitted as boarders from 1985. Today Herlufsholm is Denmark's oldest and largest boarding school as well as a day school for pupils from Year 6 through upper secondary, and the foundation is run as a commercial foundation where income from forestry, farming, the church and cemetery goes towards securing the school's continued operation. The complex with its listed monastery buildings, the old church and the surrounding forests stands as a living piece of Danish history — but is also home to pupils and staff, whose privacy guests are encouraged to respect.

Horreby Lyng
At approximately 150 hectares, Horreby Lyng is the largest raised bog in Guldborgsund Municipality and one of the largest remaining raised bogs in eastern Denmark. The bog is designated as a Natura 2000 site and has been protected since 1981, built up from peat mosses with rare raised bog flora: royal fern, bell heather, bog rosemary, cranberry and the insect-eating round-leaved sundew grow here, and 11 bat species have been recorded in the area. During the First and Second World Wars the bog was heavily exploited for peat cutting — Nykøbing F's sugar factory extracted up to 6,000 tonnes of peat per year. An EU LIFE-funded nature restoration project from 2013–21 has closed drainage ditches and restored the bog's water level. Today there are wooden walkways over the wettest sections, a nature room with an exhibition about the project's results and the bog's cultural history, and a viewing platform — on the drier edges you may encounter common adders.

Husflidsskolen i Kragevig
Oremandsgård's Craft School (Husflidsskolen) on Kragevigvej 13 in Vordingborg Municipality is a unique historic building from 1872 — Denmark's first husflid (traditional handicraft) school. It was founded and inaugurated on 30 November 1872 by widow Wilhelmine Hage of the nearby Oremandsgård estate, inspired by Grundtvig's folk high school movement. Up to 50 young people from the area gathered here twice weekly during winter to practise traditional craftsmanship. Students crafted furniture for Crown Princess Alexandra of England and intricate woodcarvings presented to King Christian IX and Queen Louise for their golden wedding anniversary. The school won numerous silver medals at exhibitions across Denmark and at the Paris Exhibition in 1878. The building, designed by architect Johan Schrøder in a Norwegian-inspired style with richly carved green-painted woodwork, wide eaves and yellow brick, was listed as a protected heritage site in 1979. Today it serves as a venue for private events and weddings, and hosts the annual Oremandsgård Chamber Music Festival, founded in the summer of 1990.

The chancel and nave were built in Late Romanesque style around 1225–1250 in chalk stone and monk brick; the nave was extended westward around 1300, with the sacristy, tower and porch added during the Gothic period and the Renaissance. Inside, the church holds an altarpiece from around 1590 with a plaster relief by Bertel Thorvaldsen depicting Christ at Emmaus, a High Renaissance pulpit of 1605–10 from the Schrøder workshop in Næstved, and remnants of Gothic frescoes including a rare Dance of Death frieze. Immediately south lies the earthworks of Jungshoved Castle, a medieval fortress that controlled shipping on Bøgestrømmen and was associated with the Gønge leader during the Swedish Wars.

Jungshoved Voldsted
On a headland facing Jungshoved Nor, immediately south of Jungshoved Church, lies Jungshoved Voldsted — the remains of a medieval castle that gave its name to the entire peninsula. The castle is first mentioned together with the church in King Valdemar's Land Register of 1231, but is assumed to have been built around a hundred years earlier, constructed to control navigation on the Bøgestrøm. In the 14th century the northern defences were strengthened with an outer moat and a palisade barrier. Around 1500 the older castle was succeeded by the actual Jungshoved Castle, but under Christian IV the complex began to fall into disrepair, and in the wake of the Swedish Wars — with which the area is closely associated through the legend of the Gonge Chief — the castle ended up as a ruin. In the 1670s large parts were demolished and the building materials transported to Vordingborg. What remains today is a clearly visible earthwork: a rounded, triangular castle mound of around 47 by 45 metres, raised approximately five metres above the surrounding land and encircled by a wide moat. The outline of the complex is still clearly visible in the landscape, and the site is a beautiful and peaceful location with wide views over the protected fjord landscape.

Knuthenborg Safaripark
A few kilometres north of Maribo, near Bandholm on Lolland, lies Knuthenborg Safari Park — Northern Europe's largest safari park and one of Denmark's most visited tourist attractions. The park grounds that guests drive through were laid out in the 1860s as the estate's grand garden with rare plants from around the world, surrounded by a characteristic granite wall, and even then visitors could pay to enter. In the 1950s a deer park with sika deer was added, and in 1969 Count Adam Knuth transformed the site into a full safari park — with the then completely new idea that guests could drive through nature in their own car and discover the animals up close. Today the park houses more than 1,000 free-roaming animals across around 70 species, including Siberian tigers, giraffes, rhinoceroses and elephants, divided by the continents they come from. Visitors can drive, cycle or walk among the old trees, historic buildings and animals, and many of the species are endangered and participate in international breeding programmes. In 2018 the Dinosaur Forest opened, and an evolution museum tells the story of life's development. With a nature playground, accommodation with views of the animals and visitor numbers reaching 410,000 in the record year 2020, Knuthenborg is an ideal full-day destination for families.

Krenkerup Bryggeri
Just outside Sakskøbing, in the historic buildings of Krenkerup Gods, lies one of the country's most beautifully situated breweries. Krenkerup Gods is first mentioned in 1367 and has passed from generation to generation for more than 650 years — and in 2007, estate owner Patrick Reventlow-Grinling decided to add a brewery to the estate's activities. The first brew, a harvest ale, was set on 12 August 2008, and since then the range has grown to include a wide selection of pilsners, wheat beers, bocks and seasonal beers. The brewery is housed in the estate's old grain store, where state-of-the-art steel tanks share space with the building's 300-year-old oak beams. The beer is brewed according to the German Reinheitsgebot — using only water, malt, hops and yeast, without additives, preservatives, colouring or added sugar — and some of the barley is grown on the estate's own fields. The quality has earned international recognition: Krenkerup was the first privately owned Danish brewery to win six gold medals at the European Beer Star competition. Visitors can join a guided tour and beer tasting and round off the visit at the traktørsted (inn) housed in the adjoining grain warehouse, where the brewery's own beers are served alongside a meal in authentic, scenic surroundings.

Museumsbanen Maribo-Bandholm
Museumsbanen Maribo-Bandholm is Denmark's oldest heritage railway and a living piece of railway history. The line between the cathedral town of Maribo and the harbour town of Bandholm opened in 1869 as Lolland's first railway — built to connect the interior of Lolland with Bandholm Harbour — and was thus also one of the country's first private railways. Passenger traffic ceased in 1952, but in 1962 the Danish Railway Club was given permission to run museum trains on the line, giving rise to Denmark's first heritage railway. Today the line runs between 50 and 60 operating days a year over the summer, when heritage trains — hauled among others by Denmark's oldest operational steam locomotive from 1879 — carry passengers on the roughly eight-kilometre journey through the Lolland landscape to Bandholm Harbour and back. The carriages represent private-railway rolling stock from the period 1869-1930, and the railway has around 30 locomotives and carriages. A distinctive feature is the well-preserved station environment in Bandholm, whose main building was listed in 1972. The railway also holds special events such as coffee trains and dining-car trains, and a train ride is a nostalgic experience for both children and railway enthusiasts.

Nakskov
Nakskov is Lolland's largest city and most important port, with a history stretching back to some of the oldest known traces of human settlement in Denmark: reindeer-hunter sites up to 14,000 years old have been found on the city's outskirts. Nakskov's official age as a market town dates from 1266, and its fertile hinterland and favourable position for trade with northern Germany brought prosperity through the Middle Ages and Renaissance — despite being burned by Lübeck in 1510 and struck by plague in 1629. In the modern era, Nakskov became a port and industrial city: the sugar factory opened in 1882–83, and Nakskov Shipyard, founded in 1916, built vessels including the school ship Danmark and the hospital ship Jutlandia. The shipyard closed in 1987, but the sugar factory still operates. Today Nakskov is a natural base for nature experiences at Nakskov Fjord and the archipelago-like waters to the west.

Nykøbing Falster
Nykøbing Falster is Guldborgsund's largest city and the administrative and cultural centre of Lolland-Falster. Founded around 1200 at the sound of Guldborgsund, its name marks it as "new" relative to the older market town of Købing — now Stubbekøbing. One of the city's most remarkable former residents was Queen Sophie — widow of Frederick II and mother of Christian IV — who lived at Nykøbing Castle and was in her time the wealthiest woman in Northern Europe. Industrialisation brought sugar, textiles, and tobacco, and the population grew from 2,000 in 1850 to nearly 18,000 a century later. The sugar factory, established in 1884, is today one of only two remaining in Denmark. Nykøbing offers good shopping, an active cultural scene, and serves as the natural hub for experiences across Falster and Lolland.

Nyord
Nyord is a small island north of Møn, connected via a narrow bridge. The island holds two very different worlds: to the north, the vast Nyord Enge — one of eastern Denmark's most important bird protection areas, home to barnacle geese, white-tailed eagles and black-tailed godwits — and to the south, the well-preserved historic village, whose half-timbered farmhouses and pilot tradition have kept Nyord almost unchanged since the 1800s. Nyord is also part of Dark Sky Park Møn og Nyord, which in 2017 became the first in the Nordic countries to receive international Dark Sky Park certification, and on clear nights the island is one of the darkest places in Denmark. Visitors are encouraged to park by the bridge and walk — driving in the village is discouraged — and the island is best suited to quiet visits, walks and birdwatching.
📍 Nyord, 4780 Stege, Danmark
Nyord Enge
Nyord Enge covers around 400 hectares on the northern part of the island of Nyord and is one of the most important bird protection areas in eastern Denmark. Since 1971, the Danish bird conservation fund Fugleværnsfonden has gradually acquired the meadow areas to preserve them as habitat for geese, ducks and waders, and today the meadows are a destination for bird enthusiasts from all over the country. From the recently renovated bird tower — refurbished in autumn 2021 with wheelchair access — there are views over the meadows and the flocks of barnacle geese, which can number 5,000-7,000 individuals during migration. Nyord Enge is one of the last places in eastern Denmark with breeding black-tailed godwits, and in winter an unusually large number of white-tailed eagles regularly rest in the meadows. Peregrine falcons are seen in the area year-round.

Nyord Enge Naturreservat

Visit the church as part of a trip to Nyord Enge and the nature reserve.
📍 Søndergade 1, Nyord, 4780 Stege
Nyord Landsby
Nyord Landsby is considered one of Denmark's best-preserved villages. All the farms are built in half-timbered style with whitewashed façades, and the oldest part of the village dates from before 1800. The fact that Nyord escaped major redevelopment is due to the island's unusual economy: for generations, residents lived from a combination of fishing and piloting — guiding ships safely through the narrow waters south of Zealand to Stege. From 1721, the right to pilot was tied to individual farms, which meant properties rarely changed hands and the structure remained unchanged. The redistribution of farmland did not reach Nyord until 1820, much later than on the mainland. Today Nyord Landsby stands as a living architectural monument with a village pond, low houses and the calm that characterises a community that never grew large. The island is connected to Møn by a narrow bridge.

Postbåden på Nakskov Fjord
The postal boat Vesta has been sailing routes on Nakskov Fjord since the 1930s, connecting Nakskov Harbour with a handful of islands in the fjord, including Enehøje and Albuen. It began as a practical postal boat that brought mail, goods and passengers to the otherwise hard-to-reach island communities — and today the trip is primarily a nature experience, where the rich birdlife, the tranquil fjord landscape and the stories of the islands' life and history take centre stage. The voyage provides unique access to islands and coastlines impossible to reach on foot, and is one of the most atmospheric ways to experience the west coast of Lolland. Departure times and seasonal overview are available on the postal boat's website.

The town's earliest known privileges date from 2 March 1403, granted by King Eric of Pomerania. Præstø Harbour, established in 1828, was once a key grain export port; today it is an idyllic marina with a lively harbour atmosphere, good cafes, and fresh fjord air. Reventlow-Museet Pederstrup
The Reventlow Museum Pederstrup tells the story of one of the key figures behind the Danish agrarian reforms: Count Christian Ditlev Frederik Reventlow (1748–1827), who as landowner and statesman was a driving force behind the abolition of the "stavnsbånd" (adscription) and the introduction of tenant farmers' freedoms in the 1780s. The museum opened in 1940 in the historic main building at Pederstrup, where Reventlow lived from 1813 until his death in 1827, and is today part of Museum Lolland-Falster. The exhibition presents Reventlow's political work through portraits, furniture and personal items from the period, offering a glimpse into aristocratic family life around 1800. After the family's time, the pottery passed to the Rødeled Foundation, and since 2019 ceramicist Klaus Kristensen has continued running the site as an open workshop with both traditional earthenware and modern stoneware. The listed building with its historic workshop is an experience in itself.

Stege By og Voldanlæg
Stege is Møn's only market town and contains one of Denmark's best-preserved medieval ramparts. The town's moat and earthworks are nearly intact — they survived because the expected urban development never took place. The Mill Gate (Mølleporten), a solid four-storey brick gate tower from the late 15th century built in monk brick with white chalkstone bands, is one of only two surviving medieval town gates in the whole country and is first mentioned in writing in 1531. The gate controlled access to the town's market square and trading life; at night it was closed to protect the citizens and their valuables. The Mill Gate and the ramparts have been restored with support from the A.P. Møller Foundation and Realdania and can be viewed freely. The town of Stege also offers a lively shopping street, cafés and restaurants, and the nearby Møn Museum (Empiregården) tells the cultural history of the town and the island.

The oldest part dates from 1200–1250, built of monastic bricks with apse, choir and nave; during the Gothic period, 1460–1525, the church was expanded to its current size. The church is easily recognisable by its prominent tower and characteristic vaulted arches in the central nave. Inside, the chancel window is a glass mosaic by Sven Havsteen-Mikkelsen depicting ivy as a symbol of eternal life; the altar table and chandelier were designed by Alan Havsteen-Mikkelsen and consecrated in 1990. The church is open every day 8.00–19.00 and also offers pilgrimage apartments.

Stevns Klint
Stevns Klint is an approximately 15–17 km long coastal cliff on eastern Stevns, stretching between Rødvig in the south and Bøgeskov Havn in the north. The cliff rises to around 40 metres high and is built up of layers of chalk, white-grey bryozoan limestone and flint deposited over millions of years. Between the limestone layers lies the famous 'fish clay' — a thin sediment layer that marks the boundary between the Cretaceous and Palaeogene periods. Here researchers found an unusually high concentration of the element iridium, which became one of the key pieces of evidence that an asteroid struck Earth approximately 66 million years ago and triggered the mass extinction that wiped out the dinosaurs, among others. Due to this extraordinary geological significance, Stevns Klint was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2014. The area can be explored along Trampestien, which follows the coast the full length of the cliff, and at Højerup Gamle Kirke as well as the visitor centre Stevns Klint Experience in Boesdal Kalkbrud. Please note that it is not permitted to chip at the cliff or collect material from the layers.

Stiftsmuseet Maribo
Stiftsmuseet in Maribo is one of the exhibition venues under Museum Lolland-Falster and tells the cultural history of the region from the Ice Age to the present. The museum has its roots in Lolland-Falsters Stiftsmuseum, which was founded in the 19th century and is thus one of the oldest museum institutions in the region; today it is housed in a prominent museum building from 1890, designed by architect Ove Petersen, located by Maribo Station. The museum's most talked-about exhibition tells the story of Stone Age girl Lola, who lived on Lolland approximately 5,700 years ago. Her story could be reconstructed because archaeologists at an excavation found a piece of chewed birch pitch whose DNA revealed details about the girl who had once chewed it. In addition to the Stone Age exhibition, the museum holds collections of prehistoric finds, rune stones and medieval church furnishings — including a collection of chancel arch crucifixes in the exhibition 'Oh my God!' — as well as an exhibition about the Polish seasonal workers who came to Lolland from the late 19th century to work in, among other things, the beet fields. With its blend of archaeology, medieval and local history, Stiftsmuseet is an obvious stop for those wishing to understand Lolland-Falster's long and layered past.

Svend Gønges Hule
In Bønsvighoved Skov on the Jungshoved peninsula near Præstø lies the passage grave Svend Gønges Hule — a Stone Age burial chamber roughly 5,200 years old, built by the Funnel Beaker culture, the first farmers in Denmark. The capstone above the chamber displays beautiful bands of red granite. The name itself, however, has nothing to do with antiquity: it derives from a legend about Svend Poulsen Gønge, "the Gønge Chieftain", who according to tradition was one of the leading forces in the resistance against the Swedes during the Swedish Wars of 1658-60. The story tells that he hid in the passage grave when the Swedes ravaged Jungshoved and captured Jungshoved Castle — a tale that became nationally known through Carit Etlar's 1853 novel "Gøngehøvdingen". An information sign at the site elaborates on the history of both the burial chamber and the Gønge Chieftain. About 800 metres northwest of the passage grave lies the site of an even older long barrow, so a visit can easily be combined with a short walk through the forest, which covers around 196 hectares stretching along the shallow coast.

Svinø Mindelund
Svinø Mindelund is a memorial grove and war cemetery immediately north of Svinø Church on the Svinø peninsula south of Næstved. During the Second World War, the German occupying forces designated Svinø as one of five central burial sites in Denmark for Allied airmen who crashed over southern Zealand, Møn and Lolland-Falster and the surrounding waters — probably due to its proximity to the flight school at Avnø Air Base. In total, 108 Allied airmen were laid to rest here: 62 from Britain and Commonwealth countries and 46 Americans. The American airmen were exhumed in 1948–49 and either reburied at a military cemetery in Belgium or repatriated to the United States. The memorial grove was inaugurated in 1950 on the fifth anniversary of Denmark's liberation and is today maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Every 4 May in the evening a commemorative ceremony is held at the graves with a church service, speeches, wreath-laying and a ceremonial flypast — one of the country's largest events of its kind.

Tapperiet
At Søndre Havn in Køge, in a former industrial area undergoing rapid urban development, lies Tapperiet — a music venue and youth culture house based in an old gas bottling hall. The venue has hosted concerts since 2006, and the raw, authentic industrial building has been preserved and forms a large part of the atmosphere. In order for the venue to continue as a concert hall in the middle of a growing residential area, the building received a distinctive grass-covered roof structure in 2014–2015, designed by Tegnestuen Vandkunsten and jointly funded by Køge Municipality, Køge Kyst and Realdania; the green 'overcoat' dampens the sound while also creating a foyer with space for additional events. Tapperiet presents around 50 concerts a year divided into a spring and an autumn season, with an emphasis on both well-known headline acts and new artists on the Danish live music scene across a broad range of genres. For the years 2025–2028 the venue, together with Teaterbygningen and Bygningen in Køge, has been designated a Regional Music Venue by the Danish Arts Foundation. Alongside concerts, the venue functions as a youth culture house for young people aged 13 to 25, offering communal meals, a makerspace, rehearsal facilities and a skatepark — a living cultural laboratory where events by, for and with young people are continuously developed and experimented with.

The building is centrally located in Køge close to public transport and is known for its distinctive, raw facade, which over the years has been the subject of several local debates. For the years 2025–2028, Teaterbygningen, together with the music venues Tapperiet and Bygningen, has been designated a Regional Music Venue by the Danish Arts Foundation.

Thorsvang — Danmarks Samlermuseum
Thorsvang is one of Denmark's most distinctive cultural-history museums — a collector's museum on Møn that has grown over time out of Henrik Hjortkær's life's work as a collector. Instead of traditional display cases and catalogue numbers, the objects are presented in 18 recreated shops and workshops reflecting everyday life in the 1920s: a grocer's, a bank, a locksmith's, a tobacconist's, a tailor's, an ice-cream maker and a bakery, to name just a few. It feels like stepping into a street scene from your grandfather's day, and the museum's strength lies precisely in the fact that the objects have not been taken out of their context. The museum also has a cosy café with a lunch buffet and home-baked cakes. Thorsvang is located in the village of Sømarke east of Stege.

Thorvaldsen Samlingen på Nysø
Thorvaldsen Samlingen is a small art museum at the manor Nysø near Præstø Fjord. The museum holds the works that sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) created in his final years, when he frequently lived and worked with the Stampe family at Nysø Estate. The collection comprises more than 50 original plaster sculptures as well as drawings and unique clay models that provide insight into the artist's creative process — among the key works is Thorvaldsen's life-size self-portrait statue. Baroness Christine Stampe had a studio built for him in the estate's garden in 1839, and the museum opened to the public in 1926. During the Golden Age, Nysø was a gathering place for the great artists and writers of the time, including H.C. Andersen, N.F.S. Grundtvig and B.S. Ingemann. The museum is housed in the estate's eastern wing; the main building and studio are private residences and not open to visitors. It is typically open during the summer season and to groups by arrangement — see current opening times and prices on the museum's website.

Ulvshale Strand
At the north-western tip of Møn, the Ulvshale peninsula stretches out into the sea with one of the island's most beautiful and unspoilt beaches. Ulvshale Strand runs along the eastern side of the peninsula and offers kilometres of fine, white sand edged by a large dune landscape. The beach has shallow, calm water that makes it particularly child-friendly, holds the Blue Flag for good bathing water quality, and an accessible path ensures entry for everyone — it has even previously received a European award as one of Europe's best bathing beaches. When the wind blows in from the east, lucky beach visitors may find amber washed up in the sand. The peninsula itself is a piece of geological history: Ulvshale was formed from material from Møns Klint, where the sea eroded the flint, carried it westward and deposited it in parallel beach ridges. The beach borders Ulvshale Skov, a rare natural forest with walking trails, and the entire area is part of Naturnationalpark Ulvshale — a 380-hectare mosaic of forest, heath, meadow, scrub and dune, most of which has never been cultivated. The area is recognised through Natura 2000, Ramsar, Bioshere Møn and Dark Sky, and from the nearby bird towers you can observe the rich birdlife on the coastal meadows towards the small island of Nyord. For nature lovers, families with children, hikers and kayakers, Ulvshale Strand is a rarely undisturbed haven.
