Husflidsskolen i Kragevig
📍 Kragevigvej 13, Allerslev, 4760 Vordingborg
Oremandsgård's Craft School (Husflidsskolen) on Kragevigvej 13 in Vordingborg Municipality is a unique historic building from 1872 — Denmark's first husflid (traditional handicraft) school. It was founded and inaugurated on 30 November 1872 by widow Wilhelmine Hage of the nearby Oremandsgård estate, inspired by Grundtvig's folk high school movement.
Up to 50 young people from the area gathered here twice weekly during winter to practise traditional craftsmanship. Students crafted furniture for Crown Princess Alexandra of England and intricate woodcarvings presented to King Christian IX and Queen Louise for their golden wedding anniversary. The school won numerous silver medals at exhibitions across Denmark and at the Paris Exhibition in 1878.
The building, designed by architect Johan Schrøder in a Norwegian-inspired style with richly carved green-painted woodwork, wide eaves and yellow brick, was listed as a protected heritage site in 1979. Today it serves as a venue for private events and weddings, and hosts the annual Oremandsgård Chamber Music Festival, founded in the summer of 1990.
