Enehøje

📍 Enehøje, 4900 Nakskov, Danmark

Enehøje is an island of just under 1 km² in the outer part of Nakskov Fjord, reached by the mail boat Vesta from Nakskov Harbour. The island has been inhabited since the 1500s and still had 25 permanent residents in 1925 — today it is uninhabited. From 1926 to 1940 the island was owned by the colourful polar explorer, author and journalist Peter Freuchen (1886–1957), who retreated here from the world to write; he received well-known guests in his blue summer house, which can still be seen. Freuchen is best known for the Thule Expedition with Knud Rasmussen and for a long series of books and films about the Arctic, and he has since become one of the most legendary figures in Danish polar history. A trip to Enehøje is a journey to a place that holds both nature and a surprising biographical connection.
